Our Apprentice Alex

My name is Alex Smith. I'm 18 years old from Stockport. I was lucky enough to get a job as a Social Media apprentice in 2013 at bake&TAKE, a company from Germany that has now come over to Manchester, ready to spread across the UK and Ireland. This is my story.

In the 2nd half of 2013, I started looking for employment after attending Aquinas college in Stockport. I never wanted to go to University so it seemed like an Apprenticeship was the direction I should take. It meant that I could have a career and learn as I go along and since I consider myself as a person who is both creative and who prefers to learn as I go, it suited me perfectly. When I was at Aquinas, a company called The Apprentice Academy came in and I signed up with them, this was one of the best things I have ever done! From August until late November, they managed to secure me between 8 and 10 job interviews with a range of different companies ranging from graphic design and social media (my main interests). These interviews increased my confidence and by the time it came to the bake&TAKE interview, I felt so comfortable about it that I wasn't even nervous. All thanks to a number of people from the academy.

Then came the interview for the job I now have. I actually couldn't make the interview on the day it was arranged for due to issues at home but, luckily it was rearranged for the following Monday as Robin wanted to see me. That surprised me to be quite honest, no one I'd been interviewed by had seemed that interested in me but now someone was keen to meet me about a job. When I arrived, I was greeted by the then store manager and took a seat. I was slightly nervous but not too bad, Robin wasn't in at that time but John (Financial Director) gave me an interview until Robin came in and it went well. They both liked what I said and I answered quickly and without stuttering. I will never forget when I got the feeling I may have a job, it was during the interview when Robin gave me a look that I can't really describe but it was a good one and he said "There just seems to be something about you". 

As luck would have it, I was right. About an hour after I got home Becky from the academy rang me as per usual to get some feedback from me only this time, I got a job offer! I of course accepted and here I am! I have had a great time working at bake&TAKE so far, Robin and John are 2 great people to work with and are very helpful and understanding with a lot of things, some of which I didn't expect them to be so good about them. The company itself is in the early stages still in this country and I am very proud to have helped make people more aware of food that is both well priced and very tasty. I'm not even just saying that because I work for them, it's just a fact! I have tried a lot of the products and I would happily pay the full price for them. 

I have to admit, I am not a very optimistic person. I never thought I would end up with a good job that has just about the right amount of work so I have enough to keep me occupied but not too much that I'm stressed out and can't cope. I am very lucky and I have to thank Robin for seeing some potential in me that no one else did and to Dave, Becky, Dan and Laura at the Apprentice Academy for helping me out so much. They helped me prepare for interviews, gave me key tips and also were genuine people I could have a laugh with as well which put my mind at ease. I would recommend both companies for anyone looking for work. It has been a very educational and worthwhile experience for me especially considering I've had no previous employment.

Product Reviews - bake&TAKE

bake&TAKE has been open in Manchester now for almost a month. With new stores opening soon in Ashton and Bury, it's good to get a little more knowledge from the Piccadilly store to see what we did right and what we did wrong. 
So, the products. Are they good? Well, I love food and I have tried some of the range the shop has to offer.


 Sausage Rolls:
Who doesn't love a sausage roll? We all do! The pastry is crisp and the sausage has the perfect taste and texture. It is great on the move as a quick snack and isn't particularly messy like other pastries.

 Pizza:
The Pizza in the picture is the spicy one, with beef, ham, pepperoni and jalapenos. It was lovely! The spice was just about right for my pallet (However, I do like spice) and it didn't overpower the taste of the sauce, cheese or any of the toppings. The texture of the Pizza wasn't too soft but it wasn't crispy either, which is my personal preference. I have bought this multiple times and never regretted any of them.

 Potato Dog
Words cannot describe my love for this thing. It is arguably the tastiest product that bake&TAKE make! It is essentially a hot dog wrapped in a hash brown but the taste is amazing. The saltiness isn't overpowering but it is the main taste here (I hate salt but this is delicious). The texture is very pleasing to try as well, the crispy outer layer of potato leads into softer potato then hits the sausage. I personal feel it is overpriced at £2.29 but I think it is worth a try.

 Cookies
Cookies are awesome regardless but these are exactly how I like my cookies; Slightly doughy, chocolaty, but with enough crisp to let it melt in my mouth. They are sweet but they're cookies? Of course they are! But It's not too sweet.

 Chocolate-Vanilla Pastry
The lack of chocolate in this is fine because the custard and pastry make up for it. The custard is sweet and runny and it is complimented perfectly by the slightly sweet and crispy pastry. It is a very nice dessert and is one of the stand out products from the range.

 Chicken Roll
Like chicken? like sausage rolls? This is perfect! The pastry has slits through it and it adds texture to it. The chicken is lean and is very moreish, I have had a number of these and I have never been disappointed with them. Very reasonable price of £1.99

Pecan Plaits
I hate Pecans but I enjoyed this! The pastry is sweet and has gooey, smooth content that is very nice on the tongue. Pecans are crispy and have a nice taste and are overall, tolerable but I do not like Pecans in general. It is worth buying.

Introducing bake&TAKE

This is Steve Mahon and Robin Page, They own the Master franchise rights to the company in the UK. Steve Mahon has a strong background in retail and has been a Director of blue chip heavy weights such as Argos Plc. and GUS Plc.  In addition, Steve has worked for over 10 years in the SME (Small Medium Enterprise) sector had has managed business from Cash Generator Ltd, Ebuyer.com and latterly Wine Cellar Ltd. with over 200 convenience and office license stores. A strong retail strategist Steve has devised growth plans through major business overhauls to inventive customer facing strategies, which have proven successful even during recessionary times. A real believer in the opportunity that Franchise can bring to the right people, Steve brings strong retailing skills coupled with major business building experience. Robin Page grew up in Northern Ireland where he worked in the reprographic industry with Canon. Moved to England in 1988 as General Manager for a book / computer game company and has spent the last 11 years as Franchise Director for Cash Generator, the Buy and Sell stores on the High Street. During his time at Cash Generator he formed a great relationship with the British Franchise Association and was a guest speaker at many of their regional events.


Robin has a wealth of franchising experience and is very experienced at both the recruitment side of franchising and the business management of franchisees in the field. He was responsible for 238 franchise stores in the UK.

Our philosophy is to work with like-minded people who have the right balance of drive, commitment and entrepreneurial flair, (and investment funds too!) whilst still retaining the ability to meet the Brand requirements we are building based on the successes founded in Germany.
Here are some of the staff preparing the food for the very first time and the end result.

Mouthwatering? The sandwiches and other products that are available are of the highest quality and freshness, prepared daily in store.

On the 21st November, bake&TAKE were getting ready for their grand opening near Piccadilly station. The grand opening was on the next day but first, there was an invite only event for business associates and friends to come and get a taste of what to expect from the new store.

The Apprentice Academy is a company that helps young people get into an apprenticeship around Manchester and further areas. Bake&Take recently took on an apprentice from them, who is now in charge of their social media and gets involved in marketing as well.

Busy Shop! Lots of people joined in to taste the food and to try out the unique self service. The main thing that makes Bake&Take stand out is the self service, which is the norm in countries such as Germany but in the UK, it is something we aren't used to seeing. It also ensures that you pick exactly what you want as opposed to just one of many things being handed to you.
